Youth Services Assistant
Job Description
General Statement of Duties
The Galion Public Library is looking for an outgoing and upbeat individual
for its Children's Department.
The Youth Services assistant is responsible for assisting the Youth
Services Librarian with the daily operations of the Children's Department.
This person will help develop and implement programs and events for school-aged
children, tweens, and families; and will perform clerical duties related to the daily
operation of the library.
Applicants should be able to work days, evenings, and weekends as required.
This position is an average of 35 hours per week. Successful applicants will
be comfortable working and communicating with all ages (children, teens, and families).
Qualifications
- Two years of experience working with children and/or teens is preferred.
- High school education is required; a college degree is preferred, but not required.
- Library experience is preferred, but not required.
- A basic knowledge of children's literature is preferred.
- Knowledge of video games and board game trends is preferred, but not required.
- Knowledge of library policies and procedures may be acquired after hiring.
- The ability to use good judgment in all situations.
- The ability to use productivity software, including office software.
- The ability to create publicity posters and fliers. Knowledge of Canva is preferred but not required.
- The ability to work well, both alone and in a team environment.
- Working knowledge of and ability to comfortably use various social media platforms,
including Facebook, Snapchat, and Discord, is preferred.
- Must have reliable transportation, and a valid driver's license is required.
- Passing a background check is required.
Knowledge and Skills
- Must be able to meet and assist people effectively and tactfully.
- Must work well with children, teens, and the general public.
- Must be able to work with multiple interruptions and be flexible to sudden change or conflict.
- Must be able to perform basic clerical and computer tasks.
- Must possess exceptional communication skills.
- Must be able to prioritize tasks given and as they come up.
- Must be able to move items and carts filled with library materials,
50-100 lbs in weight.
- This position will frequently require standing, walking, and/or sitting,
for several hours at a time. It also requires the ability to stoop, kneel,
crouch, and crawl when needed.
- Must have excellent organizational skills.
- The ability to use office equipment such as copier, fax, scanner, and
telephone systems.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Plans, promotes, and leads monthly programs for gradeschool-aged children and young teenagers,
including LEGO Club, and will also assist with other youth programs as needed and as instructed.
- Plans and arranges a passive table activity at least once a month and/or when directed.
- Assists the Youth Services Librarian with material selection and with weeding when directed.
- Assists the Youth Services Librarian in outreach opportunities in the community.
- Assists in projects around the Children's Department when needed and/or when directed.
- Performs desk duty operations including reference assistance, catalog instructions, locating
materials on the shelf, and instruction regarding the library's classification system.
- Checks materials in and out to patrons using the library automation system (ILS).
- Shelves materials and straightens shelves when needed and as directed.
- Shelf reads areas of the collection when needed and/or as directed.
- Assists in updating and posting about various library programs on the library's social media accounts,
including Facebook, Discord, and Snapchat.
- Provides reader's advisory services to the public, primarily for children and families.
- Assists in the Ohio Room with genealogy and local history inquiries when needed and able.
- May serve in any area of the library at the request of the Youth Services Librarian and the Director.
- Assists with material selection for teachers and caregivers; prepares teacher packs when needed and/or directed.
- Attends conferences and workshops relevant to designated work.
- Cleans up the Children's Room and materials as needed and directed.
- Assists in seasonal and monthly decorations around the Children's Department.
- Performs other duties as required.
